We require the following vaccines for dogs: DHPP, Rabies, and Bordetella. We highly recommend the lyme vaccine as lyme disease continues to rise each year. If you need the bordetella please read the following for more info on it! For cats we require FVRCP, Rabies, and that your cat is tested negative for FIP/Leukemia prior to admittance. Please inquire with your vet for that test.
Bordetella is commonly referred to as "kennel cough" or "canine cough".
We have not had any cases of "kennel cough" for over 2 years and we try our hardest to make sure everyone is protected before they come here and that no one enters who has come from a high risk area. There are two types of bordetella vaccine, one is a modified-live vaccine(nasal) and one is a recombinant vaccine (injectable). The modified live vaccine can have adverse effects on your dog; they may actually experience some symptoms of "kennel cough". The injectable vaccine does not have these effects. There are studies that the nasal vaccine will shed the virus for a few days to other dogs that are not yet immune, and this is why we have a strict policy about the type you receive. If your dog has a few weeks before coming here, you are welcome to get the nasal if you have adequate time, however we will not allow dogs to come during the first 10 days after receiving the nasal- it is our business policy since some dogs are boarded before having received a vaccine. We sometimes allow certain low risk dogs to attend if they have not received the bordetella because they have not been anywhere that would put them at risk to others here (dog parks, boarding, shelters, walking in cities). However, you must get the bordetella after your first visit, so please arrange it as soon as possible. Keep in mind, if you choose to get the injectable vaccine, it requires a booster 2-4 weeks later- most vet offices will not mention this fact; your dog will lose it's immunity, so please arrange the booster. The vaccine needs to be renewed within the year or you should restart the whole process over. Here is a citation: Vet Therapeutics 2007;8(1):32 40. Bottom line: nasal vaccine is fine if you come after 10 days of receiving it, but you will be turned away if you get it right before boarding! Injectable is fine to come immediately as we are honest with you about if there are any cases of kennel cough here, and unless it is springtime, it is a low risk.We are proud to say we have not had any cases of Bordetella here in 3 years. Please do not forget to schedule the booster 2-4 weeks later with the injectable.
